Kampala, 23 November 2024 – What makes a leader truly exceptional? For the Sudanese refugee community in Uganda, the answer lies in the tireless efforts of Dr. Hassan Basajjabalaba, Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Kampala International University (KIU). Dr. Basajjabalaba was celebrated with a prestigious Shield of Honor during KIU’s 30th Graduation Ceremony for his unwavering commitment to empowering refugees through education and fostering inclusivity. This accolade not only underscores his work with Sudanese refugees but also highlights his transformative 25-year legacy in East African education.
The Sudanese community’s gesture was a heartfelt acknowledgment of Dr. Basajjabalaba’s extraordinary efforts to uplift displaced populations, particularly those fleeing conflicts in Sudan and South Sudan. Amid Uganda’s role as the largest refugee-hosting nation in East Africa—sheltering over 1.7 million refugees—KIU has emerged as a sanctuary for those seeking hope and opportunities. Under Dr. Basajjabalaba’s leadership, the university has gone beyond offering education; it has embraced multiculturalism, giving displaced communities a platform to rebuild their lives.
TRANSFORMING REFUGEE LIVES THROUGH EDUCATION
One of the key reasons Dr. Basajjabalaba was honored lies in KIU’s deliberate efforts to support Sudanese refugees. With over 135 Sudanese professors, doctors, and teaching staff recruited across various disciplines, KIU has created an inclusive academic environment where displaced professionals and students can thrive. This initiative has established KIU as the leading university in Uganda for hosting Sudanese scholars and solidified its reputation as a regional hub for multicultural education.
Through the KIU Desk for Supporting Sudanese Refugee Programs (KIUDSSR)—an initiative launched under his leadership—hundreds of scholarships and grants have been awarded to Sudanese students and staff. This program has enabled them to access quality education and professional growth opportunities, creating a foundation for a brighter future.
Dr. Ahmed Abdelrahman, a Sudanese professor at KIU, lauded this initiative, saying:
“KIU has not only provided us with education but also a sense of belonging. It is a place where our culture is respected, and our dreams are reignited.”

A LEGACY OF 25 YEARS IN EDUCATION EXCELLENCE
Dr. Basajjabalaba’s impact is rooted in his 25 years of visionary leadership. Since its inception, KIU has grown into East Africa’s largest private university, living up to its motto, “Exploring the Heights.” With campuses in Kampala, Ishaka-Bushenyi, and an affiliate university in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, KIU offers cutting-edge academic programs that prepare students to tackle Africa’s most pressing challenges.
KIU’s leadership in education, innovation, and inclusivity has positioned it as a university of the future, one that regional institutions look to as a model for academic excellence. By fostering an environment where students and staff from diverse backgrounds coexist and thrive, Dr. Basajjabalaba has redefined the role of universities in social transformation.
HEALTHCARE AND INNOVATION AT KIU TEACHING HOSPITAL
The Kampala International University Teaching Hospital (KIUTH) at the Western Campus in Ishaka-Bushenyi exemplifies KIU’s holistic approach to education. Serving vulnerable populations, including refugees, the teaching hospital integrates healthcare and academic training to address societal challenges. It not only trains the next generation of healthcare professionals but also delivers critical medical services to underserved communities.
This synergy between education and healthcare has made KIU a force for societal impact, ensuring that no community is left behind.
A SYMBOL OF HOPE FOR DISPLACED COMMUNITIES
Uganda’s open-door policy has provided a haven for refugees, but challenges such as limited access to education, healthcare, and employment persist. Dr. Basajjabalaba’s leadership has positioned KIU as a beacon of hope for displaced communities. The Sudanese teaching staff and students have become ambassadors of this vision, contributing to KIU’s academic excellence while fostering socio-cultural integration between refugees and host communities.
CELEBRATING A VISIONARY LEADER
The Sudanese community’s recognition of Dr. Basajjabalaba is a reflection of the values he embodies—compassion, inclusivity, and a steadfast belief in the transformative power of education. His commitment to empowering marginalized communities has elevated KIU to global recognition and made it a source of pride for all Ugandans.
Accepting the honor, Dr. Basajjabalaba expressed:
“This award is not just about me; it’s about the collective vision of KIU to create opportunities for all. Education is the cornerstone of progress, and we will continue to explore greater heights together.”
LOOKING TO THE FUTURE
As KIU continues its journey, its focus on inclusivity, innovation, and regional collaboration remains unwavering. With Dr. Basajjabalaba at the helm, KIU is not just a university; it is a movement driving social change across Africa.
Dr. Hassan Basajjabalaba’s honor by the Sudanese community is a testament to the impact of his leadership—a legacy that will continue to inspire and uplift communities for generations to come.
