UGANDA’S 7TH ANNUAL SDG RUN PUTS CLEAN WATER AT THE HEART OF CLIMATE RESILIENCE

KAMPALA, UGANDA — What if every step taken on a running track could help bring clean water closer to a community in need? That is the ambition behind Uganda’s upcoming 7th Annual Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Run, which is rallying citizens, businesses and development partners around access to clean water and sanitation.
Scheduled for November 8, 2026, at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds in Kampala, the annual event is organised by Youth Go Green in partnership with corporate and civil society stakeholders. This year’s campaign is centred on the theme “Run for Clean Water Access,” placing the spotlight on Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6), which calls for clean water and sanitation for all.

The run comes at a critical moment for Uganda and the global community, with the 2030 deadline for achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals drawing closer. It seeks to turn public awareness into meaningful community participation and support for local water and sanitation initiatives.
FROM PUBLIC AWARENESS TO COMMUNITY ACTION
Access to safe water remains central to public health, education, food security and economic development. For communities without reliable water supplies, the daily search for clean water can consume valuable time, expose families to preventable health risks and limit opportunities for children and young people.
The SDG Run aims to bring these challenges into the national conversation, using sport as a platform to mobilise communities and encourage collective responsibility.
By focusing on SDG 6, the 2026 edition builds on previous campaigns that have highlighted other development priorities, including affordable and clean energy. The shift to water access underscores the interconnected nature of the SDGs, where progress in one area can contribute to better outcomes across health, education, gender equality and livelihoods.
For Youth Go Green, the initiative offers an opportunity to connect public engagement with practical environmental and development action, encouraging participants to take an active role in building more sustainable communities.
A RACE WITH A PURPOSE
Beyond the physical challenge, the event is intended to mobilise support for local clean water installations and sanitation awareness activities, particularly in underserved communities.
Organisers are encouraging corporate organisations, civil society groups, institutions and individual participants to register and take part. The initiative also offers companies an opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability and community engagement through team participation and partnerships.
As Uganda continues to pursue its development ambitions, initiatives that bring together citizens, institutions and the private sector can help strengthen public awareness and create opportunities for collaborative action.

COUNTING DOWN TO 2030
With just over three years remaining before the global 2030 SDG deadline, the 7th Annual SDG Run raises a timely question: how can public awareness campaigns translate into lasting improvements in people’s lives?
The answer will depend not only on participation on race day, but also on sustained investment, effective partnerships and the implementation of practical solutions that reach communities facing water and sanitation challenges.
On November 8, runners will gather at Kololo not just to compete, but to support a cause that reaches far beyond the finish line. The ambition is clear: to make every stride count towards a future in which safe water is accessible to all.
