Kampala International University (KIU) is proud to celebrate another remarkable achievement as one of its own, Johnson Adupa Akilis, emerged as Mr. Ozone 2024 in a prestigious nationwide environmental quiz contest. This milestone highlights KIU’s commitment to fostering environmentally conscious leaders and innovators who drive positive change in Uganda and beyond.

The contest, organized in partnership with the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), focused on raising awareness about the critical role of the ozone layer in protecting life on Earth. Johnson excelled among his peers, showcasing exceptional knowledge and a passion for environmental advocacy.

In his acceptance speech, Johnson expressed heartfelt gratitude to those who supported him throughout his journey. He praised KIU for its unwavering encouragement, especially acknowledging the guidance of Dr. Olawunmi Opeyemi Obisesan, Head of the Clinical Legal Education (CLE) Department, School of Law.

“My heartfelt gratitude goes to my university, Kampala International University, for its unwavering support, especially to Dr. Olawunmi Opeyemi Obisesan, who has been there for me every step of the way,” he said.

“At the end of the day, we all emerge winners because we’ve gained invaluable knowledge about protecting our beloved ozone layer,” Johnson remarked, emphasizing the shared responsibility of environmental protection.

Initially driven by a desire to win, Johnson revealed how the journey transformed his perspective into a deeper mission to protect the ozone layer.

“Truthfully, when I began this journey, my initial goal was simply to win and be crowned Mr. Ozone. However, that perspective quickly changed as I delved deeper into learning about the ozone layer and how its protection directly affects us all,” he explained.

As Mr. Ozone 2024, Johnson plans to work closely with NEMA and other stakeholders to advocate for sustainable environmental practices. He aims to inspire youth and engage communities in Uganda and Africa to take decisive climate action.

“It’s not just ‘Ozone,’ it’s our zone. Together, let’s protect it,” he passionately concluded.

Johnson’s victory reflects KIU’s dedication to addressing global challenges like climate change, which disproportionately affects Africa. From desertification to flooding, the continent is on the frontline of environmental crises. KIU continues to empower students to lead innovative solutions, fostering leaders like Johnson who are prepared to take on these pressing issues.
